Psalm 87.11 (NIV)
Undivided at Sovereign Grace Church is committed to the centrality of the cross of Christ and the importance of the local church in the single believer’s life. The purpose of our group is to encourage:
- Undivided devotion to the Lord
- Turning from selfishness to grace-motivated service
- Fostering Biblical relationships
- Intentional outreach to new singles in the church and in our communities
As singles, we do not have the responsibilities that come with marriage and should endeavor to be undivided in our devotion to the Lord with the resources with which he has provided us (1 Cor. 7.32-35). However, we recognize that each season in life has its challenges. For us, some of those challenges include honoring our parents in a changing relationship dynamic, choosing a career path, finding a spouse, beginning to manage significant amounts of money without becoming seduced by it, and juggling a schedule of work and/or college classes with responsibilities to home, church and community. At a time when temptations abound to be lazy, self-serving, anxious about the future or a multitude of other ungodly things, we are committed to being a people transformed by the renewal of our minds (Rom. 12.2). We seek to learn God’s ways and walk in His truth by authentically living those truths out. Instead of devising our own strategies of how to learn and live, we humbly look to God, who has given us His Word for such a purpose (Jn. 5.39, Micah 6.8, 2 Tim. 3.16-17). Through the “living and abiding word of God” we have been born again and miraculously given new hearts (1 Peter 1.23, Ezek. 11.19). 1 Peter 1.25 is clear: that word is the gospel.
The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ who lived the perfect life and died the substitutionary death for the sins of His people to satisfy God’s holy justice and appease His holy wrath. Being God, Jesus could not be held by death and was raised on the third day. He ascended to Heaven and now sits at the right hand of the Father. We stand as witnesses of God’s love and mercy demonstrated in the gospel, not merely as those who are right, but as those who have been rescued, saved by His amazing grace through the gift of faith (Eph. 2.8). “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5.8). Being single is no exception; our only proper response is whole-hearted worship in holy awe and reverence (Ps. 86.11-12).
